The best canyons to do during spring time in the Eastern Pyrenees
Welcome to the Pyrénées Orientales, one of the best-known departments in France for canyoning. And for good reason, the 66 department is full of varied canyons, for all physical levels, for all adrenaline seekers and which also change with the seasons!
If in summer you have a range of canyons available to you, we will offer you others in the fall, still others in the winter and even more new canyons in the spring! Enough to discover the country without ever repeating the same route, that's what we like at Explor'Addiction: vary the pleasures, find new routes, always go on an adventure, even on our own territory!
What differs from other seasons in spring is that some canyons are full of water but will dry out in the summer. This is why we are counting on a rainy spring. In addition, the days are beautiful, long and it is not too hot to access the practice site. The scrubland is in flower, the insects come out, the landscape is green, there is not too much tourism, so the sites are not very busy, we really like this time of year!
If you are looking for a canyoning route in April, May or June, here are the best canyons close to Perpignan !
Our spring canyon menu in 66:
In a discovery canyon, we suggest you descend the Galamus Gorges. This is an aquatic hike in the sumptuous Galamus gorges, located in the town of Saint Paul de Fenouillet. Many small jumps and slides await you, punctuated by river walking and swimming, in the only limestone canyon in the department ! On this very fun and relaxing course you will have the opportunity to observe fauna and flora. A nameless beauty to enjoy as a family with children aged 8 and over who are not afraid of water and who know how to swim! In addition: No problem with vertigo, there is no abseiling on this route!
In an intermediate canyon, we suggest you descend the Gorges du Baoussous. The flow in spring is ideal for taking full advantage of the slides, the full basins, the rappels under watered waterfalls, without being afraid! Located in Céret, the Baossous waterfall is touristy, it is the last waterfall on our route. If there is enough water, we can organize a 20m zip line that lands you in the water, right at the feet of tourists! We recommend this route to adults for a first experience of canyoning, it is the ideal canyon. We recommend it for children aged 12 and over. 6 abseiling descents await you, with jumps up to 4m and slides up to 5m!
As an advanced canyon, we will take you to the upper part of the Mas Calsan canyon, a canyon that we really like and which dries up in the summer. Located near Céret, this fun and varied canyon offers you large slides, an ejectable slide, the rodeo slide, jumps up to 5m and a rappelling descent into a fault which is so narrow that you will almost feel underground !
For a short day canyon, we can descend the full Mas Calsan canyon (upper and lower part). During the day this canyon is really cool! After the upper part, we will take a little picnic break in the forest to regain our strength before tackling the lower part, consisting of 5 abseils under beautiful waterfalls and slides. Very pleasant approach walk of 40 minutes in the Vallespir maquis steeped in the history of iron and talc mines, descent 6 hours, return walk of 20 minutes.
For a canyoning day trip, in spring, we will take you to the Canigou massif, in the Taurinya Gorges. This canyon sustained this merit at the end of a fairly steep 1h30 approach walk. The descent is splendid: large abseiling descents under a waterfall with no downtime, very large and very vertical slides, wild landscape on the emblematic massif of our department. An unforgettable and very physical day!
So, which one do you choose?
See you soon under the waterfalls!
